About PH
Postgraduate Education Programme in the areas of Environmental Health, Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University consisted of 4 programme within 3 Departments: The Department of Sanitary Engineering (DSE), Department of Occupational Health and Safety, and The Department of Environmental Health Sciences. Summary of each study programme within the three Departments can be descripted as followed:
Department of Sanitary Engineering (DSE)
The Department of Sanitary Engineering (DSE) was established in 1948 aiming to maintain a physical environment in keeping with health. Principle emphasis has been placed on human need to obtain better water, air, and land environment by applying proper technologies and engineering techniques.
Master of Science Programme in Environmental Technology
A graduate programme consisted of courses with laboratory training leading to the degree of Master of Science (Environmental Technology) is offered in the department. The specific objective of this programme is to study technical sciences, engineering theories and design concepts so that the students are qualified for professional practice in environmental technology field. Two specialized study areas, namely Environmental Health Engineering, and Environmental Sciences, are provided for students who are engineers, and scientists, respectively.
Doctor of Philosophy Programme in Environmental Technology (International Programme)
Environmental pollution problems have been increasingly more severe and complicated with the rapid growth of economy and industry. Pollutants with multiple components have been released into the environment in great quantity. Hence, efficient and effective prevention for the protection of the environment is of necessity in order to promote sustainable development for society. Personnel with specialized knowledge, skill and capability in science and technology for the field of environment are needed to work systematically to identify and solve existing and emerging environmental problems, to plan and conduct feasibility studies and useful system projects, and to protect the environment by preventing improper development.
The Ph.D. (Environmental Technology) programme provides in-depth learning opportunities for the Ph.D. students to analyses, synthesize, and carry out the innovative research in the field of environmental technology based on environmental Sciences, environmental engineering, and environmental health principles. The learning systems emphasize both theory and practice. The programme focuses on technologies for pollution prevention and controls of environmental pollution including water, air, and waste; engineering designs and operations for different types of treatment systems and, impact and health risk assessments are also included. Environmental Technology graduates shall have the knowledge, ability, and with moral standing to promote environmental protection, to systematically solve environmental quality problems, to apply knowledge learned into practice, and to carry out research/ projects contributing to the development of the country.
The programme has special feature, ranging of high potential scientific equipments and unit operations for thesis and research. Staff of the programme are well known with expertise in environmental engineering fields to solve problems, develop, control, and design environmental engineering treatment system such as water, wastewater, air pollution, and hazardous waste. There are also consulting staff from government and private sector. The quality improvement of the student thesis is also an aim of the programme. Two theses from the programme got the best thesis award of the year from the Faculty of Public Health in competitions, held over two years
Department of Occupational Health and Safety : Master of Science Programme in Industrial Hygiene and Safety
Due to rapid development of Occupational Health and Safety in Thailand, the number of industrial factories were considerably increased leading to an increase of technologies, equipments, machines as well as pollutant emissions in the workplace. Problems of air pollution in the working environment such as dust, soot, smoke, odor, toxic gas, heat, noise and other germs could result in occupational diseases, accidents, disabilities and death of workers.
The department provided Bachelor degree of science programme in Public Health specializing in Occupational Health following the trend of Ministry of Public Health. Later, governmental organizations and private sectors especially industrial factories need a lot of bachelors in this field, the programme was improved to serve needs of users and was finally changed into Bachelor of science (Public Health) specializing in Occupational Health and Safety.
In 1982, Department of Occupational health and safety arranged the Master of Science programme in Industrial Hygiene and Safety to serve needs of governmental organizations, state enterprises and private sectors to develop their personnels in terms of knowledge about planning, investigation, measurement, evaluation, control in occupational health and safety and capacity of doing research in related fields.
Department of Environmental Health Sciences: Master of Sciences Programme in Environmental Sanitation
The programme aims to produce qualified personnel with (M. Sc. (Environmental Sanitation) capable of control, prevention and providing solution to the environmental problems relating to the human health by an application of proper integrated knowledge – based and principle of environmental sanitation. Besides, the students must be capable of carry on the research project systematically and logically to solve the environmental problems including initiating the new innovative in the areas of environmental sanitation, based on ethic and professional requirements. These will result in the sustainability of good environmental and safety of human health of the country as a whole.
